The aim of this cross‐sectional study was to assess the quality of life of elderly non‐demented hostel residents. Quality of life was measured by face to face administration of the SF‐36 questionnaire. The very old had better self‐reported quality of life than the 75 – 84 age group. We report some problems with the administration of the questionnaire and suggest some modifications.
