In‐depth interviews are being conducted with relatives of nursing home residents regarding their experience of nursing home entry. This paper reports on preliminary analysis of the texts generated by interviews with nineteen relatives. Grounded in hermeneutic phenomenology, the study explores and describes these experiences. Seven themes are described which assist understanding of the experience from the decision making through to nursing home entry.
