In the Philippines, ageing is a low priority issue for government. This increases the need for the elderly to rely on female family members for support. Children incur a debt of gratitude (utang na loob) to their parents which is expected to be fulfilled in old age. The patterns of support are explored in detail using evidence from 18 focus groups conducted by the author throughout the Philippines. Families in the Philippines are changing with women marrying later and having lower fertility. Coupled with increasing work opportunities, these changes create new challenges for family support for the aged.
