This paper aims to challenge the thinking and perspectives of health care personnel who claim to have a genuine interest in the well‐being of the frail aged. The point is made that nursing home management must have a philosophy about its purpose and meaning if it is to offer total care for older residents. A rationale for the provision of recreation services for the frail aged is discussed along with a useful mnemonic for establishing effective relationships with older residents. The paper concludes with the thought that quality care for the frail aged is to be found in the belief that the vital element in any life equates with the dimension of aliveness.
