A new direction in research in ageing suggests that older adults are the most appropriately qualified to conduct inquiry among the ageing. In this paper, U3A is argued to be uniquely placed among organisations for older adults to take a leadership role in such constituency research. A high level of membership expertise and the widely delocalised nature of the movement are seen to be complementary attributes which support this assertion. Several U3A research initiatives are briefly discussed.
