A survey to assess if beginning nursing students in the initial weeks of their course held negative attitudes towards elderly people was carried out in 1989 and 1990. A total of 290 respondents showed that positive attitudes were held. Contrary to expectations, measures of association with elderly people on a regular versus non‐regular basis had little influence on whether attitudes were positive or negative. The implications of fostering positive attitudes and the educational needs of undergraduate nursing students are briefly discussed.
