The increasing demand for education and training programmes for a skilled aged care workforce signals the need for establishing a comprehensive gerontological education data base for future planning. The rationale and aims of a national data collection project are described. The authors have identified issues in gerontological education which will form the basis for questions included in the survey. Implications for future directions and priorities in education programmes in tertiary institutions will be discussed.
