An account is given of the principal achievements of R.M. Gibson at the Royal Newcastle Hospital. A comparison is drawn between the original integrated geriatric service and the modern counterpart which has evolved throughout Australia. Whereas the latter now contains an abundance of activities and personnel, separation exists between medical and social services. This and other aspects of geriatric medicine stand to benefit from studies made by those working in this field. The aim of the R.M. Gibson Scientific Research Fund is to encourage this enterprise.
