This article provides an overview of the Ageing and the Family Project conducted from 1980 to 1986 at the Australian National University. The development of the Project is reviewed in the context of Australian gerontology over this period. The research agenda is outlined and key findings are summarised on family relationships, population ageing, and related policy issues. Emphasis is placed on the potential and challenges of carrying out applied, policy‐relevant research by a multidisciplinary team. The article concludes by assessing strengths and weaknesses of the ANU Ageing Project and directions for the future development of Australian gerontology.
