Have unsatisfactory conditions in practice resulted in the lack of candidates for consultant posts in geriatricmedicine? This question needs to be urgently addressed as there are currently about a dozen vacant positions in Victoria. The object of this paper is firstly, t o define briefly the content of the subject and the nature of its practice; secondly, to examine potential causes for the dearth of candidates and finally t o suggest an approach towards improving the situation.
