This article explores the use of volunteers in some aged services in Perth, drawing upon the experiences of workers in the field. ‘Volunteerism’ is set within its social policy context, and is considered in terms of the tasks, training, and protection of volunteers. Some problems with voluntarism are identified and projections are noted about the future for volunteers. Historically, volunteers have given much, the use of volunteers at present within certain areas of aged care seems justified, and volunteers are likely to contribute heavily within the aged care of the future.
