This article* reviews the literature on the relationships among retirement village residents. Based upon the available American data, such villages can be said to be segregated communities. Comparable Australian data is sadly lacking. The American findings and theoretical frameworks are critically analysed before extrapolating to the Australian situation. It is hypothesized that the integration of villages into wider society (strongly advocated by Australian committees of inquiry) may occur at the expense of ‘community’ among the residents.
