80% of patients discharged from the Mount Royal Rehabilitation Unit returned to their homes. To be cost effective a modern rehabilitation unit must work closely with the treating surgeon and the community in which the patient lives. The geriatrician with an interest in rehabilitation is in the ideal position to coordinate the rehabilitation service in hospital and the follow‐up after discharge necessary to maintain a person at home.
