Thirty‐two years ago, Walter Mondale was elected vice president of the United States. His actions in the first months after the election profoundly recast that office. Richard Moe, then Mondale's chief of staff, provides an inside perspective on this transformation. The article first appeared in Minnesota History in the fall of 2006.
