This review article considers recent criticism on transnational literary and cultural relationships between black South Africans and African Americans across the 20th century. Using Black Atlantic and comparative models as the basis for discussion, this essay maps past patterns, current trends, and new directions in this particular strand of black transnational studies, while providing some commentary on certain developments in the field.
