This article focuses on Robert Southey, Romantic period poet, biographer, essayist, editor, self‐editor, Poet Laureate, bibliophile and, at the outset of the twenty‐first century the subject of two major on‐going editions. And yet, until the past half‐decade, Southey has not received the sophisticated scholarly editing that his canonical contemporaries (and even some newly canonical contemporaries) have. Southey is thus not only a necessary subject for editing, given his increasing importance to how we are writing, and rewriting, the history of the Romantic era these days, but his activity across several genres, sharpened by his own editorial exercises with much of what he published – extensive annotations and commentaries, along with more routine footnotes – makes him an editorial figure to contend with, the progenitor, if not the ultimate authority, on the whole business of editing Southey. My essay begins by tracing Southey’s relationship to and with books and the impact this had – and continues to have – on his critical posterity. It then explores how the new editions of Southey’s poetry and letters allow his significance to Romantic period culture to be rethought. This article is part of a Literature Compass special issue on ‘Scholarly Editing in the Twenty‐First Century’.
