The scholarly edition of Robert Southey's letters currently being prepared by co‐editors Lynda Pratt and Timothy Fulford for publication by Romantic Circles is a major desideratum. Although 7000 of his letters have survived, some 1500 remain entirely unpublished while most of those which have appeared in print were poorly edited. This has led scholars seriously astray, as an examination of Thackeray's use of Southey's correspondence demonstrates.
