This article makes the case for a critical consideration of representations of the devil in fin‐de‐siècle literature. Surveying the field of critical material relating to representations of the devil, it argues that texts from the fin de siècle receive little attention. In addition, it suggests that discussion of religious issues is often quite limited in critical treatments of fin‐de‐siècle writers. By using six texts published between 1880 and 1920 as examples, it encourages a reconsideration of the literature of the period in relation to the religious controversies of the mid‐nineteenth century.
