Although early works of new historicism and cultural materialism stressed the significance of early modern religion as a context for Renaissance drama, criticism in the 1990s was largely secular in focus. However, more recent years have seen the intensive development of a school of criticism which uses the methodology of historical materialism, but analyses the religious discourses and institutional structures of early modern England. This article examines in detail some of the most recent historicist accounts of the relationship between religion and Renaissance drama.
