This article analyses new approaches to early drama through investigating the mystery play pageant concerning Christ's appearance as a gardener to Mary Magdalene. In particular the article draws on approaches from iconographical studies, feminist readings, modern‐day restagings and dance theory to argue that the gestures of the past can find a voice in the present.
