Question: When is a journalist not a great journalist? Answer: When he's a great writer. This article traces the interplay between Dickens the journalist and Dickens the novelist, and highlights the increasing importance afforded Dickens's journalism. The various narrative voices and strategies of Sketches by Boz are examined in detail, before Dickens's career as a journalist is explored, with particular focus on his two journals, Household Words and All the Year Round .
