Periodontitis has been and still is considered a disease of the elderly. The periodontal reaction to microbial injury is a typical immune reaction. Since the immune systems of youth, adults and “elderly” differ, reactions to injury must also differ, suggesting that destructive periodontitis may differ from one age group to another. More data is necessary to adequately answer the question of the relationship between age and periodontal diseases.
