In 1839, the American Statistical Association (ASA) was formed amid concern for the “antiquated and ineffective machinery” used to conduct the United States Census. Over the next 180 years, ASA presidents and members played an integral role in shaping, refining and strengthening this central pillar of the US democratic system. Lynne Billard tells the story
