One in three people worldwide is overweight – and it is not just a problem of the developed world. The number of overweight and obese adults in the developing world has almost quadrupled since 1980 to around 1 billion, says a report from the Overseas Development Institute 1 . The increase was primarily in countries with rising incomes such as Egypt and Mexico. A shift from eating grains to more fats, sugar, oils and meat has been blamed. At the same time, millions, particularly children, are undernourished. In the UK, 64% of adults are classed as being overweight or obese. North America has the highest percentage of overweight adults at 70%. Reason for shame? Watch not only your weight, but also your punctuation, says Stella Dudzic.
