Justice is traditionally portrayed as being blind; so are football referees, but for different reasons. For years, football managers have been complaining that referees are inconsistent, and biased in favour of home teams. Recently, a team of university researchers has investigated whether or not there is any factual or statistical basis for such claims. John Goddard describes their findings.
