An indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) for the identification of G. vaginalis was evaluated using rabbit antiserum to the reference G. vaginalis strain ATCC 14018. All except one of 206 clinical isolates showed reactivity in the IFAT. No reactivity was observed when bacteria of other species were examined. The IFAT could be used to detect G. vaginalis in smears of vaginal fluid samples. The data confirm that the IFAT is valuable in the detection and identification of G. vaginalis .
