Five mammary tumours induced in rats by 7, 12‐DMBA were each divided into four sections, and studied as cell suspensions in vitro for response to melphalan or progesterone measured as H 3 ‐thymidine incorporation. Heterogeneity towards melphalan and progesterone was found within all five tumours, but the mode of reaction of the two drugs differed. The biological relevance of these findings is discussed.
