In 97 patients with ulcerative colitis, representing a large clinical spectrum of the disease, liver disorder was assessed by estimation of percutaneous liver biopsy. Thirty‐nine patients presented histological changes—the greater part of minor degree—, i.e. an incidence of abnormal liver histology in ulcerative colitis in 40 per cent (95 per cent confidence limits 30–51 per cent). Antibodies against mucous‐containing cells of the colon epithelium, detected by the immunofluorescence technique and without correlation to histological liver disorder, were found in 19 patients.
