On a consecutive series of 34 liver biopsies a histochemical study of Mallory bodies has been performed. This has shown, that the Mallory bodies contain unconjugated basic protein, ribonucleic acid, glycogen and some other non‐acid carbohydrate component as well as phospholipid. Further NADH‐diaphorase, acid phosphatase and esterase activity has been demonstrated. It is concluded that Mallory bodies thus contain more or less decomposed mitochondria, lysosomes, ribosomes and endoplasmic reticulum.
