Methylthiouracil (4‐Methyl‐2‐thiouracil: MTU) had a strong goitrogenic effect in C3H mice. Metabolic studies showed a significantly higher consumption of oxygen in thyroid gland tissue after treatment with MTU. Malignant changes were not observed. The serum of MTU and Thycapzol treated mice showed a higher capacity to bind T3—indicating a lower production of endogenous T4.
