196 liver biopsies from 196 patients operated for gallstones have been semi‐quantitatively estimated as to their content of lipofuscin. The amount of lipofuscin has been evaluated in relation to the patient's age, the histological appearence, the serum alkaline phosphatase, and the icterus index. A statistical treatment of the results shows that biopsies from patients over 60 years have a significantly greater content of lipofuscin (p < 0.02). A pathological histology as fatty liver or portal fibrosis results in a non‐significant reduction in the amount of lipofuscin (p > 0.05). The content of lipofuscin has been found unchanged during operation (1–3 hours).
