Rous rat and Rous hamster sarcoma cells were inoculated on the chorio‐allantoic membrane from chickens. The invasively growing sarcoma cells were rapidly “embraced” by mesodermal chorio‐allantoic cells, which later is followed by the death and phagocytosis of the sarcoma cell. In parallel the chicken cells acquire the properties of a virus‐releasing Rous chicken sarcoma cell, and it is suggested from the present observations in the electron microscope that the very intimate contact between the cell membranes of the embracing and the embraced cell is of crucial importance both as regards the transfer of the RSV‐genome and as regards the “cell phagocytosis” process.
