identifying independent prognostic factors for cognitive outcomes of very preterm newborns (3). We found in particular that after taking into account periventricular leukomalacia (and other variables included in the model), maternal-foetal infection was not significantly associated with cognitive outcomes. Similarly, in a previous study of cerebral palsy in the same population, we found that in bivariate analysis, maternal-foetal infection was associated with an increased risk of cerebral palsy, but this was no longer significant after controlling for neonatal cerebral lesions (and other perinatal factors) (4). However, this clearly does not preclude that neonatal sepsis and ⁄ or maternal infection can have adverse effects on childrens’ cognitive and even more neuromotor outcomes, in part through their deleterious effects on white matter.
