A study by James et al. revealed discrepancies between students' knowledge of sexuality and their behaviour. Conclusion. Preventive programmes should be intensive, comprehensive and preferably school based, involving parents and local communities. To make themselves trustworthy, it may be worthwhile for programmes to acknowledge adolescents' life situation as it is.
