Out of all accidents involving cars, irrespective of the outcome, and reported to the Folksam Insurance Company, accidents to private caps in which children were passengers were collected. In all, 2,763 such children were found during a period of 19 months. All injuries were coded according to the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS). The Injury Severity Score (ISS) and the risk of death or disability by RSC was also calculated. The use of restraints among all children was used as a basis for estimating the effectiveness of restraint use. Restraint systems were divided into rearward‐ and forward‐facing, the forward‐facing restraints consisting of both child seats and adult seat belts alone. The injury frequency and effects of restraint use were also linked to car weight. It was found that restraint use, especially rearward‐facing seats, were effective in reducing injuries.
