Injured child car occupants were compared with injured adults in respect to various factors, namely the risk of injury, the severity and pattern of the injuries, lost years, end the risk of serious consequences, such as death and disability. The material used was codad according to the Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and some injured children and adults were followed up for five years to study long‐term consequences. The Injury Severity Score (ISS) was used to assess the severity of multiple injuries. It was found that children and adults have different trauma epidemiology patterns, but that the methods wed to asseas injuries in adults can be applied to children, with some modifications concerning the risk of disability. Protective measures should be focused on the head region, as both fatal and disabling injuries occur mainly in this part of the body.
