Surgery of the ill, Extremely Low Birthweight Infant: Should Transfer to the Operating Theatre be Avoided?

The transportation of seriously ill, extremely low birthweight (<1000 g) infants with conditions requiring surgery can be hazardous. In two such infants, considered to be too ill to be transferred to the operating theatre, surgery was carried out on the neonatal unit. The outcome was good in both cases. Peri‐operative management is described in detail.
