Summary A modified technique of mannitol‐induced diuresis is described. It was used in infants and children in order to assess renal concentrating ability. Normal patients were defined as well as patients with central or renal diabetes insipidus. Aside from differentiating normal conditions and the classical forms of diabetes insipidus, the modified technique led to the definition of partial renal and partial central diabetes insipidus.
