In the present investigation the diagnosis of von Willebrand’s disease was based mainly on the patient’s history, on investigation of the family and on values found for AHF and the bleeding time according to Duke and to Ivy. As a supplementory examination method determinations were made of platelet adhesiveness by the method of Salzman. Laboratory tests were made for all probands and most of the relatives on repeated occasions. Many of the probands were examined for AHF-increase and shortening of the bleeding time following administration of Fraction 1 0 or fresh plasma. The criteria for the diagnosis are given on page 13. According to the patient’s history, the bleeding tendency was classified as: $+ + severe + + moderately severe + slightly increased no increase or no certain increase The classification of the bleeding tendency in each of the subjects examined is given in Table 2 in column Sum.
