Summary Three newborns with transient asphyxia developed hyponatremia and hypertonic urine. Inappropriate secretion of ADH is proposed as a reasonable explanation for these findings. Serum sodium and urine conzentration should be assessed in newborns with asphyxia or meningitis since this condition may be more common than realized.
