Summary A case of disseminated herpes simplex virus infection in a newborn associated with a fatal bleeding diathesis is reported. The presence of intravascular coagulation was suggested by thrombocytopenia, fibrinogenopenia, and reduced Factor V level. At necropsy localized fibrin and platelet deposition was found in liver and lung. It is postulated that intravascular coagulation resulted from local tissue necrosis and the subsequent release of thrombo‐plastin‐like substances into the general circulation. Heparin therapy did not alter the fatal outcome.
