Summary A work test on a bicycle ergometer was carried out on 82 Swedish boys aged 15 to 19. The heart rates were recorded, both at the submaximal loads of 600 and 900 kpm/min and at the maximal work load. Maximal aerobic power was predicted from submaximal work loads and maximal heart rate. The heart rates obtained show decreasing values with increasing age at a given work load. This is partly ascribed to physical growth, and partly to some training effect noticeable in the older boys who have completed one year of building apprenticeship.
