Summary Intracardiac phonocardiography proved useful in the following respects: a) for the diagnosis of small ventricular septal defects when the values of the oxygen content for the ventricle showed no increase; b) for the exact localization of the defect by means of the murmur; c) for the diagnosis of high ventricular septal defects in patients in whom blood from the left heart flowed direct from the outflow to the pulmonary artery, without registering elevated oxygen values in the ventricle, in spite of the ventricular septal defects (Fig. 6).
