Summary A cardiological examination is made of 54 neurologically healthy sibs and 27 parents than 50 years of age. No raised incidence of ischaemic heart disease is found. The following additional observations are made. 1. Three sibs have an obviously pathological ECG; two show suspected cardiomyopathy and one an atrioventricular block. 2. One mother has ECG changes indicative of myocardial damage, but a coronary origin cannot be ruled out, in view of diabetes mellitus. 3. Four sibs have signs of increased sympathetic tone. 4. Isolated cardiomyopathy may occur in families with Friedreich's ataxia in a slighter degree than when combined with the neurological syndrome, although such a relation is not yet proved.
