a) Material Exchange transfusions performed while a considerable hyperbilirubinaemia was present (irrespective of whether hyperbilirubinaemia was only one or the sole indication for performing the E.T.) are the subject of the analysis presented in this study. These E.T.s have been performed during the period starting the 1st of January 1957 and ending the 30th of September 1958 (21 months). The infants were born in the Southmead Hospital, Bristol, or admitted there for treatment. Clinically the cases belong to two groups according to what was considered as the main aetiological factor in the production of hyperbilirubinaemia:
