Summary Membranous stomatitis was first known in Sweden in April 1957. Since then 191 cases have been reported, but the actual number of cases is certainly considerably greater. The disease culminated in 1959 with 78 cases. In Malmo alone during the years 1957–1961 94 cases are known. The disease has been reported least frequently during the winter months. It affects both sexes equally often. Possibly it affects premature infants somewhat more often than full‐term ones. Of the affected children 75 % are in the first 3 weeks of life. The youngest was 2 days, the oldest 2 years.
