Summary The value of the prontosi! liver function test was studied in newborns and infants. The excretion of prontosil with urine was found to be significantly higher during the first year of life than later. Whether this difference should be ascribed to a lower secretory capacity of the liver is uncertain, because the result of the test is not dependent on liver function alone but also on other factors. No difference of the results was found between newborns with so called idiopathic hyperbilirubinaemia and normal newborns. The wide variation of the results of the test in newborns and infants above the newborn period limits the value of the test for this age.
