Summary Membrane thickness and associated histologic pulmonary changes were studied in an autopsy series of 117 neonatal deaths presenting pulmonary hyaline membranes. The ages ranged from 6 hours to 7 days. The thickness of the membranes increased with postnatal age, generally reaching a maximum on the third to fourth day. Intra‐alveolar edema was prominent, especially during the first day, and diminished gradually. There was an increasing incidence of complications with age in the form of inflammation and intra‐alveolar hemorrhage.
