Summary The heart rate at fixed work loads for 129 diabetic schoolchildren in Stockholm and matched controls was determined and evaluations with respect to the subjects' body weight were made. Diabetic boys were significantly shorter and weighed less than the corresponding non‐diabetics. Teenage diabetic girls were heavier than the controls. After puberty diabetic boys and girls had a higher heart rate than the controls during the standard exercise tests. In this respect the diabetics and the controls in the prepuberal ages did not deviate from one another. On the basis of the observations in this investigation and of other studies from this department it is concluded that the reason for the inferior physical work capacity of the diabetics may probably be explained by inadequate training.
