SUMMARY Fluoxymesterone (9 alpha‐fluoro‐11 beta hydroxy‐17 alpha methyltestosterone) was administered for 6 months to 21 prepu‐beral and 32 puberal children suffering from growth retardation. Four children received two courses of treatment. Fluoxy‐mesterone induced a gain in body weight in all but two children and stimulated linear growth rate in all but seven children. In prepuberal children with a daily dose of over 0.15 mg/kg body weight, signs of virilization and/or increased stimulation of skeletal maturation were observed; in puberal children the virilizing dose was 0.10 mg/kg.
